Working Whilst Your Studying

Most international students studying for more than six months are given student visas allowing them to work part-time. This means up to 20 hours work a week during term time and full-time work during your vacation periods. Its a great way to earn money, learn a new skill and meet new people. It can also look good to future employers that you have a sound work ethic and not afraid of keeping yourself busy.

Work placements and internships

Placements are an excellent way of obtaining work experience, especially if you are not otherwise allowed to take employment in the UK. The experience you gain can help you make decisions about your later career and is helpful when applying for jobs after your study.

You can usually do a work placement as part of your course even if you are not permitted to take employment. However, Probationary sponsors are not allowed to sponsor you to study courses with work placements.

From summer 2021, international students who have successfully completed an undergraduate or master’s degree will be able to benefit from two years’ work experience in the UK upon graduation, through the new Graduate Route. Students who complete their PhD will be able to stay for three years.
